This page is a little out of place, but still, when including media in an XHTML page or in a java applet, the type of media used should be taken into account for many different reasons. A few of them are listed below.

The file size: Are the users in the intended target group browsing through the web with a slow modem or fast cable connection? If an image on a web page has a very large file size, a user with a slow modem connection will probably not be so happy about the long loading time. Most likely, such a user will not wait until the page has finished loading, but will move on to another web page instead. To keep the file size of an image relatively small, image compressions could be used.

Supported media types: All media types are not necessarily supported. Not all users have added the various plug-ins that are neeed for SVG graphics and various media players. Some users may not want to add plug-ins and/or install new software, and other users may not even be able/allowed to do so.

Media presentation: How will the users be exposed to the media in question? For example, there are users that like having background music while viewing a web-page. However, some users find background music very annoying. Whether to embed background media into a web page or supply a link to the media depends on the intended target group. When a link is used, how will the media be 'delivered'? If a sound or video file is very large and a user has a slow modem connection, it will suffer the same problem as when waiting for large images to load. One way to solve this could be to make large media files streamed based.

Platform dependency: What platform do users have? Some media are platform dependent. For example, Java3D works well with PCs, but didn't work with MACs until recently.
